Missing Chiesa di San Giorgio (Picture 2) is unforgivable. It is a breathtaking example of rococo Baroque church, which surpasses many others in the province. An imposing 250-step staircase leads to this work of art by Gagliardi. The church was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century giving it an extraordinary tall façade and an interior filled with polychromatic marbles. In Low Modica, San Giorgio’s church “mirror” is Cattedrale di San Pietro (Picture 3) where a staircase escorted by life-size sculptures of the apostles leads to the building. Corso Umberto I is lined with churches and historical mansions. Going down the corso you will find Chiesa Santa Maria del Carmine (Picture 1) , Chiesa di san Giovanni Evangelista and Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie which once had a convent that today houses the Museo Civico with its array of artefacts from Modica and Cava d’Ispica. In the ex-convent upstairs is the privately run Hyblean Museum of Arts, Crafts and Popular Traditions. This museum opens on request. Do not miss it for it boasts an ethnographical collection and chocolate laboratory are worth a visit. Chiesa di Santa Maria di Betlem is also a beautiful must where the 1902 flood highest level is marked.
